Myself in 5 paragraphs
8 years in Japan
I moved to Tokyo, Japan in 2003 to get some life experience. After teaching English for 2 years I ended up running my own design studio there for 6 years working with a broad range of clients in industries such as music, corporates, fashion and education.
My first “real job”
Things were good in Tokyo but I really wanted to get some studio experience and collaborate with a diverse range of people on a daily basis. I moved back to Australia and started working in a small (30ish people) studio in Collingwood called Trout Creative thinking.
Dipping my toes in the corporate pond
I enjoyed working at Trout due to the great people and interesting work and learnt a lot while I was there but now my interest moved into working in house. A great opportunity at NAB that encompassed my skill sets of web and motion design presented itself to me and with a healthy amount of trepidation I took it.
NAB was a great experience and I transitioned into a more UX/UI based role which was a great way to combine my curiosity of human behaviour and love of design. I worked at NAB for nearly 4 years and then moved to EnergyAustralia to lead the creation and implementation of their design system as well as project work.
Immersing myself in end to end, at scale.
In September 2019 I took up a great opportunity to focus on 2 projects at ACTU (Australian Council of Trade Unions). I was lucky enough to use a wide range of my skill sets from Initial research and product strategy to UX and the final visual design.
Right here, right now
In my past few roles I’ve been focussing on work that produces positive societal outcomes. I’ve been lucky to work with organisations to mature and some times establish the way that UX and user first thinking can help reach business goals. From helping to ensure that workplaces are safer and for better workers rights (ACTU) to saving lives through blood donation (Red Cross Lifeblood) and now in my current role at Federation University helping people seeking to better improve their life through education.
